Owner/Veterinarian
Hi, I’m Dr. Michelle Shelton, veterinarian and owner/partner at Best Friends Animal Hospital. I’m a 2016 graduate of Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and have been practicing in small animal general practice and emergency medicine since graduation. I also hold degrees in Dental Hygiene and Healthcare Administration from the University of Southern Indiana and am a proud member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Over the years, I’ve served as an associate, managing, and medical director in busy veterinary practices across Washington, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and now Florida. Altogether, I bring over 25 years of experience in veterinary medicine, having worked in various roles in both clinical practice and education since 2001.
I relocated to Florida in late 2024 and am thrilled to call it my permanent home. I have a special passion for small animal dentistry — which I also enjoy teaching — drawing on my background as a former dental hygienist and adjunct faculty member for a university dental hygiene program. While I primarily care for dogs and cats, I also have limited experience with exotics and pocket pets.
Why I Chose This Profession
I’ve wanted to be a veterinarian for as long as I can remember — I was told I first said it at the age of three, and that dream never changed. Helping animals and supporting their owners through education and compassionate care is truly my life’s calling.
Favorite Part of My Job
I love helping pets by empowering their owners with knowledge and guidance. My clinical interests include dentistry, ultrasonography, internal medicine, dermatology, cardiology, ophthalmology, and end-of-life/palliative care. Every day offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of both pets and people, which is what I value most about this profession.
Personal Hobbies and Interests
Outside of work, I’m a proud mom who enjoys music, books, travel, hiking, and anything that involves being outdoors or near the water. I also have a soft spot for Corgis — my two, Dixie Lee and Daphne Rae, keep me laughing every day — along with my Siberian cat, Leopold.
